Sir Richard Branson, the king of Virgin Group, announced that all new father’s across Virgin will have the ability to get a year of full paid paternity leave. While it is structured based on service, it is still a major increase compared to what most UK fathers get for paternity leave.
Even with the recent introduction of additional paternity leave in the UK, the financial support is nowhere near enough when factoring in what statutory pay is for maternity/paternity leave. Under Branson’s new plan, any new dads in his company who have been with the company less than 2 years get 25% of full pay for a year. This compares to just 10% of your salary that you’d get with the statutory payments under the government scheme. Pretty good as a starting point! Those lucky new fathers who have been with Virgin for over 4 years are then entitled to a full 100% of their salary for a year to be with their newborn(s). As Sir Richard said, ‘I’m delighted that we can offer this support to our staff so that they can enjoy parental leave to the full.’ Right, now where do I find the job openings page on Virgin’s site?!
